Want to meet me? Awesome. I’m Katrina.

I’m a late twenties molecular biologist + self taught cook, live in British Columbia, Canada, and love to experiment with different recipes.

I happily share my passion for all things vegetarian; whether sweet or savory, hoping that you too will find as much happiness in your culinary journey as I do. Because food is meant to be enjoyed!

In 2010 I graduated with a Biological Science degree and I’ve been having the time of my life learning about nature, and the beautiful world we live in ever since. I love exploring and have gotten to do so many cool things ranging from spending hours trying to mate moths in Switzerland (I lived there for two summers) to dissecting bear poop for tiny bones.

Life is crazy, so I try to maximize my own by running marathons, hiking as much as possible, travelling, and eating food that brings me genuine happiness. I started this blog in January 2010 in an attempt to document my cooking experiments, and over the course of the past three years, Warm Vanilla Sugar has shown me that I wasn’t alone, and that there are thousands of people (that’s you) in this big crazy world who share similar passions and interests!

I am by no means a professional. I drop some of my finished products, my biscuits will never be as good as my Nanny’s and I’m still figuring out my SLR camera. But, I love what I’m doing, and I’ll never post a recipe that doesn’t turn out.

Hopefully you will use some of these recipes and enjoy them as much as I do. I’d love to get your feedback!

  1. Nice to meet you Katrina. I saw you in Foodbuzz.

It looks like you are having a lot of fun baking, you go girl!
I love baking too, however, my husband asked me to stop because we have been gaining a few pounds since we got married 🙁

  2. I like the looks of that salad. I have a few at my site that you may like. Particularly the purple potato and arugula one.

    Hi Katrina,
Great blog, I must try that Lemon poppyseed bread!

I have a publishing proposal I’d like to email you, if you could be so kind as to provide me with an email address?

Many thanks, and keep up the great work.

    HI Katrina!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I was only in Zurich for about a day visiting some friends so I didn’t get to see much (just some good food!) but I just moved to Paris which I am really excited about! Sounds like you have been having a great time traveling. I hope to travel some while I am here so if you have any must-sees (anywhere in Europe!) I would certainly appreciate it! I love meeting other foodies!

  7. Very cool site Katrina…. Very proud of my former students…Mrs. Marquardt

  8. Nancy says:

Wow, Katrina! I am also a food-blogging vegetarian biologist without an SLR camera. (I have plenty of fish electroshocking stories involving sweaty waders and tingly legs.) Even though I’m American, some of my best recipes come from Canadians! You guys probably do a lot of cooking to feel cozy in the winter…Anyway, I’m following your site, starting right now!

  9. Sue says:

    Hi, Katrina,

I was attracted to your site because I have a daughter named Katrina! My Katrina lives in Seattle, Washington and is 38.

My husband and I both like to cook. Unfortunately, at our age, we can’t eat as much as we used to, so can’t bake as much as we would like to try new things. We stick more to trying main dishes.

  10. Loving your blog, and love your intro! My husband and I lived in Ottawa for 2 years and loved it…always nice to “meet” a fellow Canuck blogger 🙂

  11. Laura Scott Clow says:

    Hi Katrina!
Found your site looking for a recipe to match my beautiful grandmother’s butterscotch pie. She would make a big pie for the grownups and turn a cupcake pan upside down to make little pie crusts to bake and fill for my sister and me. This was many, many years ago but the memory is still fresh and sweet…moving forward, tried your butterscotch marshmallow bar recipe this morning, SO DELICIOUS, my two sons will be in heaven when they get home from school today. Thanks for a little bit of sweetness and good luck with your career and many interests!

    • Laura, that story just made me so happy! I guess both of our Grandmothers like to bake delicious butterscotch pies 🙂 I am also a HUGE fan of those butterscotch bars. They are always devoured on my Christmas baking tray! Thanks for the well wishes. Hope you drop by again soon 🙂

You don’t use a DSLR? I don’t have one either, but my pics don’t look nearly as beautiful as yours. Is there a trick to it?

I started a blog in the winter, and I too don’t have a fancy SLR camera like the real bloggers, but I love cooking and baking and I love sharing what I make. It’s a great hobby!

Do you work with a museum as a bioogist? That sounds like a very interesting career! Especially with the opportunity for travel (my other passion!)

Hi Katrina, My name is Flavia. I discovered your blog earlier this year and have been enjoying your posts and following you on Facebook and Twitter as well. I have been meaning to stop by and introduce myself for a while, but this year has been a bit crazy and I am still catching up. I’m American, but I attended university in Canada (Bishop’s University in Quebec). Living in Canada has always been one of my fondest life memories-it’s such a beautiful country. I hope you have a wonderful summer!

    • katrina says:

Hi Flavia! This totally made my day, thanks for stopping by! I haven’t visited Bishop’s University, but have been to Sherbrooke a few times. I currently live in Montreal and love it here. I’m so happy you introduced yourself! I hope you have a nice summer too, and am going to pop by your blog now 🙂

  28. Hi Katrina! I just found your blog through a comment over at the Curvy Carrot and I’m loving your blog 🙂 It’s nice to find another blogger close to me age! (I’m 23 – 24 in Oct) Looking forward to reading your blog on the regular.

  29. Hi Katrina–Just found your blog and realized we have a few things in common! I also lived in Switzerland (and loved it) and am a vegetarian!

  30. I’m so glad I found your blog Katrina! We have so much in common.
I’m not a Biology major but I can appreciate the interest in it. How amazing that you lived in Switzerland too! I dream of visiting there one day. 🙂

  31. Hi Katrina!

Nice to meet you! I can’t remember how I stumbled upon your blog, but I absolutely love it! I’ve been following it for a while now, but have never really gotten to the point of actually saying hi. I’m sure you can relate to the reason why I didn’t, though… One heck of a big pile of books still to be read for my Master’s thesis…

Glad to know I’m not the only student out there who’s trying to graduate and keep up with a food blog at the same time 😉

I’ve read you’ve been to Switzerland. Have you been to Davos? When I was a kid, I spent one beautiful summer there, just hiking, playing in the waterfalls and throwing snowballs at my brothers and sisters whenever we managed to hike all the way up into the mountains 😉 I loved it!

Also love the look on the turtle’s face, by the way!

    • katrina says:

Nila, I definitely know what you mean about being busy, so no worries there! I’m just happy you’re saying “hi” now!

I HAVE been to Davos! I ran my first marathon there in 2011 – it was such a gorgeous place, and we had a blast staying in the city for the weekend. Isn’t Switzerland the best??

Thanks again for popping by 🙂

  32. Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs says:

New fan…love poking around your site, so far love what I see! Fun to follow another Canadian (although not born and bred, but my daughters are being raised here and my husband is a true blood ;)). Looking forward to following along your journey. Liked your facebook and pinterest pages as well!

  34. Katie says:

I’m a half-marathon stroller pushing runner and vegetarian and I definitely need my baked goods fix each day! Glad to find your blog! Recipes look great!

  35. Sarah says:

    Hi Katrina,

A huge congrats on your wedding; I hope you have a great honeymoon and that we get to see some foodie pics on Instagram, at least! I’m still working on your brownie recipe — apparently brownies are not my forte — but I thought I’d let you know that the resulting mess I end up with is still hungrily devoured by my three younger brothers! (I think one of them swirled an undercooked batch through ice cream…)

I also nominated you for the Liebster Award. I know it’s not relevant to your blog, but I thought it might make a nice gesture nonetheless, so if you end up wanting to take a look, it’s here. I hope you have a great time away!

    Sarah xo

    Hi Katrina!

I stumbled across your blog from another site and I’m glad I did! I love vegetarian food (I try to eat vegetarian as much as I can, but with a meat-loving fiancé, it’s not that easy!) and I was pleasantly surprised to see your a fellow Montrealer! That’s so cool! Whereabouts? I’m in the Rosemont area. 🙂

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and that I just subscribed for email updates. Looking forward to pinning some of your recipes!
