Meet Katrina

Want to meet me? Awesome. I’m Katrina.

I’m a 24-year old biologist, live in Ottawa, Canada, and love to experiment with different recipes.

In 2010 I graduated with a Biological Science degree and I’ve been having the time of my life learning about nature, and the beautiful world we live in ever since. I love exploring and have gotten to do so many cool things like:

-Crawling in a cave filled with woodchuck feces on a bat search.
-Shocking fishes with electrofishing rods.
-Going out at 2 am with headlamps to call mating frogs.
-Picking leaches off of snapping turtles.
-Spending hours digging in mud identifying aquatic insect larvae.
-Dissecting bear poop for tiny bones, and
-Living in Switzerland dissecting various plants searching for annoying insect pests!

The last point was of course my favorite, and from April to September 2011 I’ll be living in Delemont, Switzerland, again doing more research with insects. The scenery is bananas.

But besides my love for this crazy world, I also love baking. So, I try to find a balance between learning about insects and neurobiology to diving into the adventures of baked goods.

I have a mean sweet tooth, and thought it would be a good idea to share some of my baking ideas with others. I’m by no means a professional. I drop some of my finished products, my biscuits will never be as good as my Nanny’s and I don’t have an awesome SLR camera to take photos like many of the other food bloggers. But, I love what I’m doing. And I’ll never post a recipe that doesn’t turn out.

I’m a vegetarian, so many of my non-sweet meals include recipes that not only taste great, but have been modified to be great for you. I can’t say I modify everything though. Some things are just meant to be buttery and jam-packed with sugar. Aww yeah.

Hopefully you use some of these recipes and enjoy them as much as I do. I’d love to get your feedback!

Good luck!

  1. Nice to meet you Katrina. I saw you in Foodbuzz.

It looks like you are having a lot of fun baking, you go girl!
I love baking too, however, my husband asked me to stop because we have been gaining a few pounds since we got married :-(

  2. I like the looks of that salad. I have a few at my site that you may like. Particularly the purple potato and arugula one.

    Hi Katrina,
Great blog, I must try that Lemon poppyseed bread!

I have a publishing proposal I’d like to email you, if you could be so kind as to provide me with an email address?

Many thanks, and keep up the great work.

    HI Katrina!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I was only in Zurich for about a day visiting some friends so I didn’t get to see much (just some good food!) but I just moved to Paris which I am really excited about! Sounds like you have been having a great time traveling. I hope to travel some while I am here so if you have any must-sees (anywhere in Europe!) I would certainly appreciate it! I love meeting other foodies!

  8. Nancy says:

Wow, Katrina! I am also a food-blogging vegetarian biologist without an SLR camera. (I have plenty of fish electroshocking stories involving sweaty waders and tingly legs.) Even though I’m American, some of my best recipes come from Canadians! You guys probably do a lot of cooking to feel cozy in the winter…Anyway, I’m following your site, starting right now!

  9. Sue says:

    Hi, Katrina,

I was attracted to your site because I have a daughter named Katrina! My Katrina lives in Seattle, Washington and is 38.

My husband and I both like to cook. Unfortunately, at our age, we can’t eat as much as we used to, so can’t bake as much as we would like to try new things. We stick more to trying main dishes.

  10. Loving your blog, and love your intro! My husband and I lived in Ottawa for 2 years and loved it…always nice to “meet” a fellow Canuck blogger :)

  11. Laura Scott Clow says:

    Hi Katrina!
Found your site looking for a recipe to match my beautiful grandmother’s butterscotch pie. She would make a big pie for the grownups and turn a cupcake pan upside down to make little pie crusts to bake and fill for my sister and me. This was many, many years ago but the memory is still fresh and sweet…moving forward, tried your butterscotch marshmallow bar recipe this morning, SO DELICIOUS, my two sons will be in heaven when they get home from school today. Thanks for a little bit of sweetness and good luck with your career and many interests!
    Laura

    • Laura, that story just made me so happy! I guess both of our Grandmothers like to bake delicious butterscotch pies :) I am also a HUGE fan of those butterscotch bars. They are always devoured on my Christmas baking tray! Thanks for the well wishes. Hope you drop by again soon :)

  15. Jennifer says:

You don’t use a DSLR? I don’t have one either, but my pics don’t look nearly as beautiful as yours. Is there a trick to it?

  16. Sally says:

Katrina, so nice to “meet you.” :) I’ve been to Switzerland before.. isn’t it just breathtakingly beautiful? What an amazing picture.

  17. Ollie B says:
